Small business LLC checklist
Forming the LLC is only the first step. Use this checklist to get the entity, banking, records, bookkeeping, and launch workflow ready without turning setup into a month-long distraction.
Pick the operating state
For most small businesses, file where you actually operate unless there is a specific tax, investor, or legal reason to do otherwise.
Confirm the business name
Check the state business search, domain availability, social handles, and whether the name is clear enough for customers to remember.
File articles of organization
Submit the LLC filing through the state site, choose a registered agent, and save the approved articles as a permanent company record.
Get an EIN
After the LLC is approved, request an EIN directly from the IRS so the business can open accounts, pay taxes, and work with vendors.
Create an operating agreement
Even single-member LLCs should document ownership, manager authority, profit distributions, and what happens if the business changes hands.
Open the business bank account
Use the approved articles, EIN, operating agreement, and owner identification to separate business money from personal money on day one.
Set up the lightweight back office
Create the shared drive folder, bookkeeping workflow, invoice template, password vault entries, CRM, and recurring monthly compliance reminder.
