The Business Boomer Staff profile is used for general guides, announcements, and educational resources created or maintained by the Business Boomer editorial workflow.

Five practical Codex skill workflows for research, content, page review, video and reporting, with concrete inputs, checks and a free starter kit.

Five interlocking tiles representing reusable business workflows

When your team finds a useful way to do something with AI, it should be easy to use again. You should not have to rebuild the instructions every time you write a blog, review a page, or work on a video.

That is where Codex skills fit into our business. They give the next task a repeatable procedure: what to read, what to produce, and how to check it. We use them alongside project records and connected tools.

Below are five places to start, with our public skills catalog and blog growth kit so you can try the approach yourself. A skill still needs the right inputs and working tools; downloading instructions does not connect your accounts.

How we used this approach on our own blogs

We packaged four portable editorial skills, automation prompts, a review rubric, and growth data in our free blog growth kit. The case study shows the observed search results and explains the limits of the comparison.

I want readers to be able to try the procedure, not just hear that we use AI. Choose one article, apply the research and review steps, and keep the result. Then improve the instructions where the real task exposed a gap.

What a Codex skill actually contains

OpenAI documents skills as reusable packages built around a SKILL.md file, with optional scripts, references and assets. The description helps Codex identify when the skill is relevant. Instructions tell it how to perform the work. Skills can be invoked explicitly or selected when their description matches a task. See the official Codex skills documentation.

A skill does not automatically connect your CRM, authorize a payment or install every required tool. Read its requirements before using it. A research skill that expects a web connector will still need that connector; a rendering skill will need a working renderer.

Our public skills catalog provides downloadable starting points. For a smaller introduction, the free blog growth kit contains four editorial instruction templates, a project template, review guidance and measurement files. Neither download activates a schedule by itself.

1. Turn a customer question into a research brief

Input: a real question from a sales call, support ticket or consultation, stripped of personal information.

Output: a short brief defining the reader, the question, credible sources, uncertainties and a proposed answer structure.

Imagine a cleaning company repeatedly hearing, “What should we do before the first visit?” A good brief distinguishes the company's actual preparation policy from general advice. It identifies which details the owner must supply and avoids inventing service guarantees.

Use the kit's blog-research-brief template, or adapt a research skill from the catalog. Try this assignment:

Prepare a research brief answering this customer question. Use our attached service policy for company-specific facts. Identify missing information explicitly. Give each factual claim a source and recommend one useful next step for the reader.

Your completion check is straightforward: can the owner trace each company claim to the policy, and does the outline answer the customer's question? A long source list without a clear answer is unfinished work.

2. Produce a complete article draft

Input: the approved brief, the relevant service information and one existing article that demonstrates your preferred voice.

Output: a complete draft with useful examples, source links, metadata and an appropriate call to action.

Use the kit's blog-draft template after the research brief passes review. Ask for one article with a concrete audience. “A guide for homeowners booking their first cleaning” gives the agent more direction than “write an SEO blog about cleaning.”

The owner should read for business accuracy first: which services are offered, where they are available and what happens after an inquiry. Then check whether the article is understandable without knowing your company. Remove unsupported superlatives and generic paragraphs that do not advance the answer.

A draft is complete when it is ready for editorial review. Publication remains a separate operation. Our blog growth case study shows how we keep that workflow connected to measurement without claiming that a skill guarantees rankings.

3. Review one landing page against a real visitor task

Input: a page or local preview, your offer and the action a visitor should be able to complete.

Output: a prioritized list of observable problems, with proposed corrections and screenshots when available.

Our catalog includes page-review and design skills. Choose one whose requirements match your environment. A review skill that can inspect local code may not be able to inspect a login-protected hosted page without additional access.

For an illustrative landscaping estimate page, use this prompt:

Review whether a first-time mobile visitor can identify our service area, understand what an estimate includes and find the request form. Report the three most important problems with evidence. Prepare local fixes if the source is available, then verify the same visitor task again.

This gives the review a purpose. A color preference is less urgent than an unreadable phone number or a form button hidden below an obstructive banner. Verify corrections at a narrow mobile width and on desktop, including the actual form behavior where authorized.

4. Prepare a transcript-led video edit

Input: an authorized recording, a short creative brief and a transcript with reliable timing.

Output: a reviewed cut plan, an editable project and an encoded draft to watch.

The public catalog includes HyperFrames-related resources; the HyperFrames Student Kit supplies a dedicated project with editing instructions and scripts. Use a complete editing setup rather than assuming an isolated skill file provides every dependency.

For a five-minute educational recording, ask the agent to identify dead air, propose retake cuts and suggest a few visual explanations. Preserve deliberate pauses and qualifications. A tighter edit should still represent what the speaker meant.

Your review must include the actual video and audio. Check the sentence before and after each cut, captions, framing and the readability of graphics. Our long-form editing tutorial explains why the transcript must be retimed after cuts.

5. Turn a performance export into a useful weekly note

Input: a dated export with metric definitions, the comparison period and the business question.

Output: a concise report separating observed results, possible explanations and the next test.

This is a good candidate for a small custom skill. Tell it to preserve missing values, report denominators and compare equivalent periods. An illustrative shop might ask whether a new product page received more qualified visits after its copy changed. Page views alone cannot answer the qualified-lead question.

Ask the agent to calculate from the supplied rows and retain the calculation source. A useful note might say, “Visits increased; inquiries stayed flat; we do not yet know whether the additional visitors matched the offer.” That is more actionable than declaring the campaign successful from one rising number.

Make the first skill dependable

Write down the expected inputs, output location, source requirements and completion check. Include one good example and one failure to avoid. Keep private customer data and credentials out of reusable examples.

After each real run, record how long review took and what needed correction. If the same mistake recurs, improve that specific instruction. If the task varies too much, narrow it. Measure actual effort before claiming savings.

Begin with the blog growth kit if editorial work is your immediate need. Otherwise, select one skill from the catalog, inspect its requirements and test it on a small, reversible assignment. The first win is a deliverable you can verify and use again.

FAQ

Quick answers about this guide and how to put the idea into practice.

Do Codex skills install business integrations?

Not automatically. Skills provide instructions and may include supporting files. Required tools, authentication and authorization must be configured separately.

Which workflow should a small business try first?

Choose a frequent, narrow task whose output you can judge, such as a research brief or one landing-page review. Test it on real work before expanding.

Are the AIBB skill downloads free?

The linked starter kit and public catalog offer downloadable materials. Connected software, AI services and rendering providers may have separate costs.
